In our biweekly column Social Intercourse, we share our picks for notable things happening on campus and in Edmonton. Check out all these amazing local events!


What: Deep Freeze: A Byzantine Winter Festival
When: January 20 to 21
Where: 118 Avenue (90-95 Streets)
Admission: Free

Edmonton’s first festival of 2024 will celebrate foraging and Alberta’s roots through experiencing various cultures that make up the Alberta Avenue District! The event will feature artistic creations, a homestead village, and music, accompanied by light installations, ice sculptures, and street hockey matches. Finish off the first month of the new year with community fun!

What: Friends Across Campus Paint Night
When: January 17, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Where: Orion Room, Students’ Union Building
Admission: Free, must RSVP

Starting a new semester means making new friends, which isn’t always easy! If you’re looking to meet new people, this casual paint night is the perfect opportunity. A Bob Ross tutorial will be provided, as well as all of the necessary painting supplies.

What: Gateway to Cinema: Barbie
When: January 11, 6:45 p.m.
Where: Metro Cinema
Admission: Free for students with valid I.D

Gateway to Cinema is a partnership between The Gateway and Metro Cinema that provides free movies to students! This month’s movie is Barbie, a hit movie of 2023 starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. A fun yet enlightening take on the childhood toy, Barbie is perfect for all ages. Whether you’ve seen it before or have yet to, you don’t want to miss it!

What: Orpheus in the Underworld
When: January 12 and 13, 7:00 p.m.
Where: Convocation Hall
Admission: Free

The University of Alberta’s Opera Theatre is presenting Orphée aux Enfers, written by Jacques Offenbach. This opera is a satire on the myth of Orpheus, a musician, prophet, and storyteller in Greek mythology. The performance is comical and unique, set against a backdrop of America in the 1950’s. Support the Opera Theatre class at this free event, which is sure to dazzle and impress!

What: ‘Proofread’ at FAB Gallery
When: January 16 to February 24, Tuesday to Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Where: FAB Gallery main floor
Admission: Free

Yvonne Mullock’s exhibit, Proofread, immerses viewers in a word game that uses a printed typeface made from donated clothing.The font can be used by viewers to spell out words and statements which will be edited, added to, and rearranged. Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to engage in art that showcases the community!
