The beginning of spring is the first sign of our freedom, unless you are taking spring classes. Then it is just a sign of continued despair.
No longer will we be forced to pay hundreds of dollars to sit in vaguely condemned buildings. Rather we will be free to frolic and be financially irresponsible. Oh how I yearn to spend money in a completely unacademic way. Instead of buying coffee in the morning for the purpose of maintaining my composure in lectures, I will simply be buying it because I’ve accidentally become addicted to it. Besides the different nature of financial pursuits that come with the changing seasons, the weather is absolutely brilliant.
That wee bit of spring sun hitting my face in the evening after six hours of lectures is the only thing giving me motivation to continue through finals season. The way the sun has me acting, I feel like a little chlorophyll-filled plant converting the weak spring rays into just enough energy to last me till the next day. And the ground! Oh, how happy I am to see her again. No longer will the weather force us to wander around in chunky-winter boots. Rather we are free to wear our dirty runners and slides once again. No longer will leaving the house run the risk of a brush with frostbite and hypothermia. We are once again free to just wear a hoodie with no recourse.
Frankly, I don’t even care that it is kind of gross outside right now with all of the mud. Or garbage that the melting snow is uncovering. Or the mould that comes with said melting snow and annoying pebbles as well as other remnants of winter. I’m just happy to see the sun again. No longer will my contacts freeze to my eyes! Honestly spring could be the worst season and it wouldn’t even matter because we have the sun back.
The return of the sun and morning bird songs is a sweet reminder of all of the good things to come. In a few months, we will forget the woes of winter time and everything will be perfect. Additionally, with this extra seasonal pep in our steps and the much-needed intake of vitamin D, we will no longer be seasonally depressed. We can just be full of the regular amount of woes that come naturally with living in Edmonton.
