Three Students’ Council vacancies filled, one student elected to GFC in 2025 UASU by-election

Voter turnout in the 2023 fall by-election was 2.7 per cent.

From October 1 to 2, students voted in a by-election to fill vacancies on the University of Alberta Students’ Union (UASU) Students’ Council and General Faculties Council (GFC). Students elected three new councillors to Students’ Council, and one representative to GFC.

Voter turnout was 2.7 per cent of the student body, with a total of 1,035 votes cast.

Students’ Council fills three seats

Students’ Council oversees the UASU. Councillors are responsible for ensuring that the UASU fulfills its mandate. 

Prior to the by-election, Students’ Council had seven vacant seats. Council now has vacancies for the faculties of law, medicine and dentistry, Native studies, and pharmacy. Three students were elected as councillors.

Denee Reansbury ran to fill the Native studies seat, but was disqualified for missing the all candidates meeting.

One undergraduate representative elected to GFC

Composed of 158 members, GFC is the highest academic governing body at the U of A. Nolan Greenwood was elected as an undergraduate representative for the faculty of business, taking one of the two vacant business seats. GFC now has nine vacancies: agriculture, life, and environmental sciences (ALES); business; education (three vacancies); engineering (two vacancies); pharmacy; and science.
