In our biweekly column Social Intercourse, we share our picks for notable things happening on campus and in Edmonton. Check out all these amazing local events!


What: Bead Market
When: January 11 from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m..
Where: Ramada Edmonton South
Admission: Free (need to reserve a spot)

While the Christmas markets are over, there are still a number of markets happening in the city. The Bead Market has numerous vendors selling crystals, gems, beads, jewellery, and more. Organized by TreasureStone Beads, this market is perfect for those interested in getting crafty, adding more jewellery to their collection, or just wanting to explore!

What: Connections//Collisions Cabaret
When: January 4 at 7:30 p.m..
Where: Mile Zero Dance Society
Admission: $25

Mile Zero Dance Society is a dance-based organization in Edmonton that hosts classes and events. Their latest cabaret series, Connections//Collisions, features a number of talented artists and pieces of art. The theme of this cabaret is Frames, which invites audience members to think about the many frames in our lives. Along with this upcoming cabaret, there will be two more taking place in March and April.

What: The Olive Reading Series
When: January 8 at 7:00 p.m..
Where: Rooster Kitchen & Bar
Admission: Free

The Olive Reading Series is an ongoing monthly poetry-reading series in Edmonton that hosts local poets who perform their written work to an audience. The poets who will be performing for the month of January are Ben Hertwig and Andy Weaver. Hertwig is a co-owner of Paper Birch Books here in Edmonton, and Weaver is an associate professor at York University in Toronto.

What: wawisihcikan – adornment
When: January 7 – 25
Where: FAB Gallery
Admission: Free

The newest exhibition from the Fine Arts Building (FAB) gallery, wawisihcikan – adornment, is curated by MJ Belcourt and features works from Elaine Alexie, Erik Lee, and Carmen Miller. The exhibit looks at adornment through an Indigenous perspective. It examines the connection to the land, and knowledge about our ancestors. Along with wawisihcikan – adornment, FAB gallery will be displaying two other exhibits at the same time — itself, the netting, holding, and 2024 Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada.

What: Wednesday Night Trivia
When: January 1 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m..
Where: The Cabin Pub + Party
Admission: Free

Want to put your knowledge to the test? Every Wednesday The Cabin hosts a trivia night that tests everything from music to visuals to general knowledge. It’s the perfect opportunity for you to enjoy a drink and a little competition. The best part is that there are prizes for the winning team!
