Brew Crew: Alley Kat’s Lost Mitten

The intense beer isn't for everyone as it packs a sour punch

Price: 341 ml 6 pack $17.99 (Liquor Depot)

Call me someone who easily jumps on bandwagons, but seasonal brews always get me excited.

There’s something fun about getting a limited edition beer that is specially crafted for that specific season.

Alley Kat‘s last seasonal offering, their Pumpkin Pie Spiced Ale, was wonderful. Their latest iteration for the cold winter months is just as delicious, if not better if you like a more intense beer.

Called Lost Mitten, Alley Kat has crafted an intense blueberry sour beer for the winter months. As a brown ale, Lost Mitten is absolutely incredible. The blueberry flavour is not overpowering and tastes real — not like some of the other flavoured beers on the market which leave a chemical or synthetic taste in your mouth.

Lost Mitten is dark with a slight head when poured out and is zippy. Its definitely a beer you’ll only want one of — not because its bad, but due to its heft and heaviness. The beer almost reminds me of Sour Patch candy.

This is definitely not for everyone. First, you better like sour foods or drinks. Second, you will need to like your beer with a bit of bite to it.

Instead of adding to the numerous stouts or porters — beers traditionally served during winter because of their heartier nature — Alley Kat took a brown ale and redefined the category completely.

If you like beers with intense flavours or want to try something new with nothing comparable like it, Alley Kat’s Lost Mitten Blueberry Sour is the drink for you.
