Residence Roundup: November 23

“Residence Round Up” is an ongoing piece where we catch up with students in residence to find out what’s been going on and what’s coming up for those who live at the University of Alberta. This week we chatted with Kyle Monda, a resident assistant in HUB Mall, and Stephen Raitz, a senior resident assistant in Mackenzie Hall, Lister Centre.

General Residence News

  • Resident assistants and senior resident assistants voted this week on the proposed unionization of residence student staff. You can read about the proposed residence staff unionization here, and stay tuned for the results of the vote. The proposal has passed, so there’s more to come…

East Campus News

  • Pinecrest and Tamarack’s courtyards have been outfitted with exterior furniture… just in time for the snow. The courtyards had been empty since the residences were opened in 2013. The interiors of those residences still don’t have enough furniture, Monda said.

Lister News

  • Raitz said it’s been a pretty regular year so far. Residents are adjusting to the smaller number of leadership positions in Lister for the second year in a row with the LHSA under suspension.
  • While there were many “Welcome to Lister’”events in September, it was difficult to run programs in October since students were so busy with school. September events included scavenger hunts, river valley campfires, tower wide breakfasts, and wide-scale tag games.
  • Raitz is hopeful that programming will increase next semester. There will likely be a tower competition in Mackenzie Hall at the beginning of the semester giving students more opportunities to bond with their floors.
  • DODGEBALL UPDATE:
    • This year, instead of having dodgeball teams divided into eight divisions there are only four, allowing players to face off against more teams.
    • The divisions have just been shuffled with teams moving up or down depending on their performance.
  • The new Lister meal plan proposal failed in the governance pathway, which means Ancillary Services is back to the drawing board.
