Top 5: Christmas songs

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Although we started the holidays with a controversy (thanks to those dang Starbucks cups), the time has finally come to pull out the Christmas stockings, lights, ornaments, and nutcrackers and get into the festive spirit. The weather has not yet provided us with piles and piles of snow, so here are five songs that will get you into the mood for Christmas.

5. White Christmas – Bing Crosby

This one dates back to the 1950’s, but it’s hard to resist one of the pioneers of pop carols. Crosby makes his short little tune endearing due to the harmony of the chorus, birds, strings, and of course his soothing and deep voice. This song is a total staple for Christmas carols, if some of the newer ones start to get a little repetitive, toss on this throwback.

4. The Christmas Song – Nat King Cole

The smooth and blues mixed in with the carol will just melt your heart on the cold, cold days. This song is everywhere but it never gets old. It does not fail to keep up with its title since it is “The Christmas Song” to listen to if you want to really get into the festive season.

3. Santa Baby! – Eartha Kitt

This is probably one of the sexiest carols out there — who knew a big red suit could be so saucy? The lusty, raspy lyrics definitely tempt the listener into wanting to get under the mistletoe with their own sexy Santa. Everyone from Madonna to Michael Buble have made remakes of this lusty track, but nothing can beat Queen Eartha.

2. Last Christmas – Wham!

How can we leave this one out from the playlist? This is the song that will make you want to make a hot chocolate and sit warm by a fireplace. It’s a classic, so you’ll hear this literally everywhere you go for the next month of so, but that’s alright. It’ll just bring back fond memories of “Last Christmas.”

1. All I Want for Christmas is You – Mariah Carey

Mariah Carey is the goddess of Christmas carols, and this track is easily the crowned jewel. The upbeat and constant ringing of Christmas bells will get you into the Christmas mood, while her powerhouse vocals will leave you with tears in your eyes.  This has to be one of the best Christmas songs ever made, just maybe stay away from trying to hit her dolphin like high notes for you don’t want to strain your vocal chords.
