What: Hoda Katebi – From Tehran Streetstyle to the War on Terror: A Conversation on Gender, Feminism, Orientalism, White Supremacy, and Empire through Fashion

Hoda Katebi is the creator of Joojoo Azad, a political fashion blog that tackles fashion and activism through an anti-capitalist, intersectional-feminist lens. She is also the author of Tehran Streetstyle, a book of photojournalism documenting subversive youth fashion in Iran. Her talk for International Week will focus on fashion’s role in political violence, inequality, and resistance around the world.

All For Love, a Restoration drama by John Dryden, is rarely staged. But in the hands of Canadian theatre veteran Peter Hinton, this epic portrayal of Cleopatra and Mark Antony’s love affair is sure to be riveting. Featuring the graduating BFA acting class, the production is MFA Theatre Design candidate Sofia Lukie’s thesis project.
What: An Afternoon with Sophie Labelle
When: February 8, 1:00-2:00 p.m.

Sophie Labelle, a comic book author who gained a platform with her popular webcomic Assigned Male Comics, is giving a talk at the U of A to discuss her experiences as a trans woman in comics. Hosted by Feminists at the University of Alberta, the talk will likely touch on Labelle’s work as a trans artist-activist over the past few years.
What: The U of A New Works Festival
When: February 5-10, evenings at 8:00 p.m., weekend matinees at 2:00 p.m.
Where: The Second Playing Space in the Timms Centre for the Arts
Tickets: $12 for students, $15 for others
The New Works Festival is the U of A’s only festival of new plays written and produced entirely by students and alumni. Featuring four new student works, the festival is a great chance to see emerging artists before they’re Alberta-famous. The plays show in sets of two on alternating nights, so make sure to book off two evenings this week to check out the whole spread.
What: USO Concert: Beethoven 4
When: February 10, 3:00-5:00 p.m.
Where: Convocation Hall
Tickets: $5 for students, $10 for seniors, and $15 for others
In its first concert of the winter, the University Symphony Orchestra (USO) will be performing Beethoven’s Symphony no. 4 and Wagner’s Meistersinger Overture alongside two new works by young Edmonton-based composers, Geoff Li and Joel Toews. Featuring playful and exuberant tunes, this concert will be a sure way to unwind while leaving your room at the end of the weekend.
