Brew Crew: Baltika 7 Export
Baltika 7 Export 500mL single bottles
One of nine types of beer made by Baltika, the Export 7 is the only one readily available overseas.
Baltika is of similar size to Molson Coors in Canada and is the largest brewer in Russia with 38 per cent market share in the beer sector. Despite the size of the brewery and ubiquity of the product in its native land, Baltika offers a flavor which is simultaneously complex and drinkable.
The cap of a Baltika bottle is a pleasure to open, as there is no opener required. But there are no twist-offs here. Instead, the cap is more of a pull-tab design. Once open, the drinker couldn’t be blamed for mistaking the scent for that of the water poured out of a bong after partaking in some particularly sticky icky.
It pours like a traditional lager, a well-carbonated yellow brew with a sizeable, if thin, head. Despite the skunky aroma and the everyday look of the beer in the glass, it’s a delight to drink.
Resembling the flavor palate of Beck’s fairly closely, there is no trace of grass in the taste. Smooth, fairly light, yet with enough malt and hops to keep things interesting, I would very seriously consider moving to Russia if this is what’s on tap at every bar.
