SuppliedOur biweekly column, Social Intercourse, is entering a new era. It’ll still feature amazing local events across the city, but it’s going by a new name: What’s the 311? Read on for some fun things to do in Edmonton this month!
What: Edmonton Heritage Festival
When: August 1–3
Where: William Hawrelak Park
Admission: Free
Head to Hawrelak Park and take in the sights, sounds, and smells of one of Canada’s largest multiculturalism festivals. Watch concerts and dance shows from all across the globe, and try some traditional cultural dishes. You can even check out and purchase crafts and artisan goods. Join the fun and celebrate the beauty of diversity in Edmonton and Canada at the Edmonton Heritage Festival.
What: Pride Pop-Up Screening and Community Mixer
When: August 8 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Where: 11726 95 Street
Admission: $11.98
The Edmonton Short Film Festival is hosting a community mixer and screening celebrating queer filmmaking. For the first two hours, enjoy free food and drinks included with admission and meet artists from within the Edmonton community. Then, stick around for the screening of five queer short films from a breadth of Canadian filmmakers. Swing by, make some new friends, and enjoy some great movies in the process!
What: TheatreSports Summer Smackdown
When: July 30 to August 1
Where: Rapid Fire Exchange
Admission: Student tickets are $11.35
Catch the tail end of an iconic Canadian improv series with Rapid Fire Theatre. TheatreSports-style improv throws performers into head-to-head comedy combat as they vie for the coveted improv crown. If you like the concept of sports, and you love to laugh, come out and see some great improvisers compete.
What: Opening Night Party: Under the Influence
When: July 31 at 7:00 p.m.
Where: The Roxy Theatre
Admission: Free
Celebrate the opening of a brand new exhibit featured in the Roxy Theatre. Under the Influence, by Alberta-based artist Dunce, is composed of silkscreen paintings of screenshots from the artist’s social media feed. The exhibit explores the fleeting nature of social media, and contradicts it by using slow, physical processes to create images. Enjoy some refreshments and potentially meet the artist as you check out this brand new exhibit.
