Notes from Council: Lister Hall Student Association presents SRAMF renewal proposal
Additionally, Vice-president (operation and finance) Nathan Thiessen addressed issues with the disbursement of student representative association fees.
Helen ZhangAt the University of Alberta Students’ Union (UASU) council meeting on November 18, the Lister Hall Student Association (LHSA) committee presented the proposal of their $75 student representative association membership fee (SRAMF) renewal.
Additionally, Vice-president (operations and finance) Nathan Thiessen addressed issues with the disbursement of SRAMFs during the academic year.
“There are … some expressed concerns about the way SRAMFs are received, in the sense of the timelines as well as the processes included into it,” Thiessen said.
“Members of the student council have been undertaking that work to ensure financial accountability and transparency on behalf of members. However, I do believe there’s a better way [to] better serve students in ensuring they get consistent, smooth manner in regards to reviewing SRAMFs, and that is by internalizing it with the UASU,” Thiessen added.
LHSA SRAMF renewal proposal
According to LHSA President, Nolan Greenwood, the “proposal is … to renew [their] one time fee of $75 for all residents of Lister.” If accepted and passed in the general election, this process will begin in September 2026, and last until August 2029.
“[The SRAMF will] allow us to continuously operate for the next three years quite seamlessly, won’t force us to rely on external funding, and ensures the stability of our budget,” Greenwood said.
When questioned by Vice-president (student life) Logan West about the impacts the LHSA would have if the proposal was denied, Greenwood stated they would struggle with recruiting returning residents into leadership positions.
“We have 61 residents who live in Lister, and the fee, [and] the wage for a vice-president, definitely encourages them to come back more than other organizations,” Greenwood said.
“For example, the Lister Dodgeball League also operates within residence. They don’t have a wage for their staff. They consistently see a decreased number of student leaders coming back,” Greenwood added.
This is not a mandatory fee, as residents may opt-out through the UASU website or Google Form, which is provided by the LHSA.
There were no executive updates.
