From Lunar New Year to Indigenous Celebration Week, there are so many events happening on campus and in the city to check out!

In our biweekly column Social Intercourse, we share our picks for notable things happening on campus and in Edmonton. Check out all these amazing local events!


What: Firestorm and Frequencies
When: February 8 at 7:30 p.m..
Where: Convocation Hall
Admission: $10 for students

Formed in 2017, the Top Notes Flute Quartet is Edmonton’s only professional flute quartet, which will be performing at the Firestorm and Frequencies concert. The University of Alberta’s department of music puts on a number of mainstage concert performances throughout the year, and Firestorm and Frequencies is one of seven events happening in February!

What: Flying To The Sun
When: February 4 – 8
Where: Fine Arts Building (FAB) Gallery
Admission: Free

Flying To The Sun is the latest exhibition from FAB gallery, and is being co-presented as part of International Week 2025. The curator, Narges Noori, is a design studies scholar. Noori has written and illustrated two children’s books about women’s empowerment. The exhibit will display a variety of children’s book illustrations that aims to empower young girls and challenge the norms of society.

What: Indigenous Celebration Week
When: January 28 – 31
Where: Students’ Union Building (SUB)
Admission: Free (except for Tia Wood performance)

The U of A Students’ Union (UASU) is putting on a number of events for Indigenous Celebration Week (ICW). Happening in SUB, there is everything from a Careers Event, to a Two-Spirit Drag workshop, to an Indigenous Market. ICW “aims to share knowledge and create positive energy for the Indigenous community on campus and its allies.” This year’s theme focuses on Indigenous futures!

What: Lunarlicious by AsiaFest
When: January 31 – February 2
Where: South Edmonton Common
Admission: Free

Lunarlicious is an event put on by AsiaFest to celebrate the Lunar New Year. AsiaFest annually hosts events that offer dozens of food vendors and activities such as the Extreme Eating Contest. Lunarlicious will be a cultural celebration of the Lunar New Year with lots of food and entertainment. Spanning over the course of three days, there will be numerous vendors and dance performances. You can even get a fortune reading.

What: New Works Festival
When: February 6 – 9
Where: Timms Centre for the Arts (Second Playing Space)
Admission: $16.50 ($13.38 for students for matinee performances)

The department of drama’s New Works Festival at the U of A is a theatre festival run by students. The festival consists of a Night A and Night B performance with two different performances on each night. U of A drama students write, direct, and perform in each play! This year’s theme is “star-crossed fates” where all four plays show their take on the theme.
