Eating Edmonton: Corpuz Bakeshop

Corpuz Bakeshop offers some pricey, but delicious, donuts.

Corpuz Bakeshop is tucked away across Eastwood Park, just off of Alberta Avenue. The first storefront location recently opened in May. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, its baked goods are sold at Bountiful Farmers’ Market. The family-owned bakery specializes in hand-crafted donuts inspired by Asian cuisine.

As for the atmosphere of the bakery, it isn’t a place I’d sit in for a while. Although there is some indoor seating, the bakery is not very large. The decor is a bit sparse. The donuts are great, but I’d recommend picking them up and heading elsewhere to enjoy them.

Although Corpuz Bakeshop also offers beverages and other baked goods, the donuts are definitely the star of the show. The bakery sells 10 different types of brioche donuts. Some of the flavours like strawberry and Oreo are classics, while others are very unique. Personally, I’ve never seen ube or flan donuts before visiting this bakery.

The brioche donuts tasted great; I visited the bakeshop right at opening, so they were still moist and fluffy. I really enjoyed the flaky polvorón coating on all of them. Filipino polvorón is a sweet and crumbly shortbread. Of the four flavours I tasted, the Leche Flan donut was definitely my favourite. The custard and caramel filling had a light and fluffy consistency. I also enjoyed the Biscoff, donut which was topped with a cookie. The Biscoff cream filling tasted like melted cookie dough, although I found that it was a bit too sweet and it overpowered the brioche donut itself.

Personally, I did not enjoy the filling in the Raspberry Mascarpone donut and I would not order it again. The raspberry jam was flavourful, but I found the cream cheese to be pretty bland. The Oreo Polvorón donut was delicious. The filling was really creamy and I found that it was the perfect sweetness — you can never go wrong with anything Oreo-flavoured.

The hours for Corpuz Bakeshop aren’t great as the bakery is only open Thursday through Sunday. However it’s open from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., so plan your visit accordingly. The donuts are on the expensive side, with prices ranging from $5.50 to $5.80. However, I do think that the prices are justified because of how fresh and soft the donuts are. These are some of the best quality donuts I’ve ever had and I will definitely be heading back to try out new flavours!
