Site on U of A’s South Campus selected for new Stollery Children’s Hospital

"A new stand alone pediatric hospital will quite literally support the future of our province," Chair of the department of pediatrics says.

A site on the University of Alberta’s South Campus has been selected as the location of the new stand-alone Stollery Children’s Hospital.

The hospital will be located at the northeast corner of 122 Street and 51 Avenue, near the U of A farm.

At a November 24 news conference, Minister of Infrastructure Martin Long said the location
— currently undeveloped green space — will allow for quick construction without demolition or building relocation.

The site’s proximity to North Campus “will strengthen collaboration with academic and research partners, thereby supporting innovation in care and treatment,” Long said.

According to a statement from U of A media relations, the majority of the U of A farm won’t be impacted as “the hospital site represents eight per cent of the South Campus’ more than 370 acres.”

“We will work closely with any researchers and students affected by this land transaction. Agricultural crop research will continue until construction commences. Building a hospital is a long-term process, and it is anticipated that construction could take at least five to eight years,” the statement read.

New Stollery Children’s Hospital to advance pediatric health care

In 2021, the province invested $1 million towards the project, which was matched by the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation (SCHF). Budget 2025 commits $11 million over three years to the project’s planning and design.

The province is working with the faculty of medicine and dentistry on the planning process, Minister of Hospital and Surgical Health Services Matt Jones said. Planning is scheduled to be completed in 2026.

Dr. Todd Alexander, chair of the department of pediatrics, expressed his excitement for the announcement.

“This is exciting news for Alberta’s families, for the provincial health care system and for all the students, child health innovators, and health-care leaders at the U of A,” Dr. Alexander said. “A new stand-alone pediatric hospital will quite literally support the future of our province.”

“In this new hospital, the U of A will be honoured to continue its important partnership with Alberta Health Services, the Stollery Children’s Hospital, the SCHF in order to train pediatric health care providers, accelerate health science discovery, and connect those discoveries to practice and improve the outcome of our patients,” Dr. Alexander added.
