A kitchen fire broke out in Nîpisîy House on the night of March 28. Renovations are now underway.

On Friday, March 28 at approximately 9:10 p.m., a small kitchen fire broke out in a suite at Nîpisîy House due to a pot on the stove, according to University of Alberta Media Relations. Nîpisîy House is a U of A residence apartment building.

Matthew Naruzny, a fourth-year computer engineering student and resident in Nîpisîy House, said that after the fire alarms went off and residents evacuated the building, he heard people discussing how a fire happened on the fifth floor.

“Probably seven fire trucks showed up in total. I think overall, maybe we were outside like an hour or two,” Naruzny said.

“Eventually when we walked [back] in, there was water dripping out from the roof. We walk into the lobby and there is water dripping all the way down.”

Camille Levrero, a master’s of business administration student, was a resident on the second floor of Nîpisîy House. She received an email on Monday, March 31, that said she had to transfer out of her unit immediately for restoration work to occur, because of the damage from flooding. Levrero was given a unit in HUB Mall.

“It was quite challenging with all the finals that [were] going on and having, like, 1,000 things to move,” Levrero said. “We had some help from people, our friends, with the moving, but residence services were not that helpful on this.”

According to Levrero, the flooding came from the fifth floor, and around 16 residents from the second to fifth floor had to transfer.

“While the fire damage was minimal, it activated the sprinkler system and the building fire alarm. This led to water damage in the suite and some neighbouring suites. Most importantly, no individuals were injured,” the statement from Media Relations said. “Repairs to the suites are now underway.”
