As we approach the end of final exams and the Christmas season, here are some fun and relaxing events to see on campus and in Edmonton!

In our biweekly column Social Intercourse, we share our picks for notable things happening on campus and in Edmonton. Check out all these amazing local events!


What: A Cozy Cafe Christmas
When: December 21 from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m..
Where: Naked Cafe
Admission: $15 advance, $20 at the door

Looking for a relaxing way to get into the Christmas spirit? Sticks and Stones is a Canadian percussion trio that will be performing jazzy Christmas tunes at the Naked Cafe. This event is perfect for grabbing a cup of hot cocoa and listening to some holiday music.

What: Composition Area Concert
When: December 18 at 7:30 p.m..
Where: Convocation Hall
Admission: Free

The department of music’s newest concert, Composition Area Concert, is composed of and by undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Alberta. There will be performances from students on the flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon. Wind down from final exams with this musical performance!

What: Cycle
When: December 11 – 22
Where: Mile Zero Dance Warehouse
Admission: Pay-what-you-will

Cycle is the latest production from Thou Art Here Theatre, directed by Kristi Hansen. Cycle tells the story of Andrew Ritchie’s experience as a bike food-courier in Toronto and his journey of making his living this way. This performance is an immersive experience, as audience members are seated on stationary bikes and can pedal alongside Ritchie.

What: Gateway to Cinema: The Apprentice
When: December 19 at 6:45 p.m..
Where: Metro Cinema
Admission: Free for students with valid I.D.

Gateway to Cinema is The Gateway’s partnership with Metro Cinema that provides free movies to students. The Apprentice follows a young Donald Trump (Sebastian Stan) alongside “cutthroat lawyer” Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong). The film follows the pair in the 1970s real-estate world of New York, and examines the two men’s dynamic.

What: Luminaria
When: December 13 – 15, 20 – 22, and 27 –29
Where: University of Alberta Botanic Garden
Admission: $20 for students

Luminaria takes place at the U of A’s beautiful botanic gardens, where you can walk through the scenic, candle-lit pathways. There are numerous food trucks for a warm bite, and performances by acapella groups in the Kurimoto Japanese Garden.
