Golden Bears hockey set four-game win streak against Trinity West Spartans

The two wins leave the Bears undefeated against the Spartans with a win streak of 4-0.

The Golden Bears hockey team won two games against the Trinity West Spartans on October 14 and 15. The two wins leave the Bears undefeated against the Spartans with a win streak of 4-0.

On October 14 the Bears won 4-1. In the first period, the Bears scored twice. The first goal came after Dawson Davidson carried the puck into the Spartans zone, and passed to Matt Fonteyne in the outside lane. Fonteyne then shot over Spartans goalie Isaac Labelle’s shoulder. With less than 30 seconds in the period, Ryan Hughes caught a pass from Dylan Plouffe at the point, and scored on a shot from between the hash marks. 

The second period saw another goal for the Bears, alongside one goal for the Spartans. The Bears goal was scored after Hughes carried the puck in and passed to Volcan in the Spartans zone. Volcan passed to Tyler Preziuso in the crease to put the puck past Labelle. 

The Spartans only goal of the game was scored by Jarrett Penner, who shot it over Nick Schneider’s pads on a rebound from Travis Verveda at the point. 

The Bears scored one final goal halfway through the third period when Davidson passed to Josh Prokop. Prokop carried it through the crease for a backhanded goal over Labelle’s pads.

On October 15, the Bears won 7-1. The second game saw a lot more physical aggression between the teams, with several fights between the teams breaking out. The most notable of which occurred near the end of the second period, involving several players on the ice.

The first two goals came in the first period. While on power play, the Bears scored their first goal off a shot from Plouffe on the boards. The goal was called in by the referee on the goal-line after it bounced off the post. The second goal of the first period came from Adam Hall. After a pass from Jakin Smallwood was caught by Hall in the crease, Hall tapped the puck into the net. 

The second period saw four more Bears goals, all scored within eight minutes of each other. The Bears began their scoring streak as Joel Sexsmith stopped the Spartans attempt to carry it out of their zone. Sexsmith passed to Plouffe, who passed back to Sexsmith, then to Hall at the hash marks. Hall shot it over Labelle’s shoulder, for his second goal of the game.

The next Bears goal came off a shot from Preziuso at the top of the circle while on power play. Preziuso’s goal led the Spartans to switch their goalies, pulling Labelle with 21 shots on him, for Berk Berkeliev

After some cycling in the Trinity West zone, Ethan Sakowich secured the puck and fired a shot on net from the dot, setting the score at 5-0. The final goal of the second period occurred on another Bears powerplay, after Davidson carried the puck into the corner and passed to Smallwood between the hashes for a successful one-time shot.

Trinity West’s second goal of the weekend happened during a 3-on-1 play, following two University of Alberta penalties. The goal was scored on a shot from the point by Jesse Pomeroy.

Alberta secured one more goal in the final period while playing shorthanded. After Smallwood carried the puck out of the Bears zone, he passed to Preziuso at mid-ice. Preziuso then took the outside lane all the way to the net and shot top corner. Preziuso’s goal ended the game at 7-1 in favour of the Bears.
