Spill The Tea: Reusable teabags

Reusuable tea bags makes drinking tea more sustainable and more enjoyable

As an avid fan of tea and tea, I really appreciate tea drinking accessories that make consuming tea more enjoyable. Wow, how many times can I use the word “tea” in one single paragraph? As a tea fan, my favourite accessory is the reusable cotton tea bag. It acts like a mini cheesecloth, holding all your loose tea together in a little sachet.

What makes the reusable tea bag so great is that it’s more environmentally friendly than purchasing single-use tea bags. Sure, companies can come out with ‘biodegradable’ and ‘eco-friendly’ paper tea bags that come in ‘recycled’ packaging, but how many of us simply toss these bags in the trash instead of separating them into compost without a second thought? No matter how biodegradable a product is, the more environmentally friendly one is the product that can be cleaned and reused many times before falling apart.

The reusable bags linked above also come in a variety of sizes, making them a great option for storing fresh produce from the grocery store instead of the thin, one-time-use plastic bags.

The cotton bags are susceptible to staining, especially if the tea you’re using has strong colours. This has never bothered me, but other reusable tea infusers are also available, such as metal or silicone tea infusers. Whatever your choice of tea might be, consider buying loose tea and steeping it with reusable infusers instead of buying prepackaged, one-time use tea bags.

Reusable tea infusers are a 10/10 recommendation, because an action as small as choosing reusable alternatives when enjoying our creature comforts shouldn’t be dismissed as insignificant in the grand scheme of protecting our environment. And, that’s the tea.
