Local artists put on multiple concerts in Edmonton every month. You can find everything from rock music with the band Ecstasy to punk rock with The Slight Brains to rap with RAI. But when two artists from two different genres of music mix to produce a show, it’s a once in a lifetime deal.
Local musicians Mickey Green and Cab’Ral are collaborating for an 18+ concert on January 26. Green has been releasing music for almost three years now with a style all of her own.
“I guess the sound we’ve created for live sets would be a blend of acoustic chords and dark bass rhythms paired with melodramatic lyrics,” Green says. “I think it’s really dependent on the listener’s ear to to decide what style we fit into though!”
Green’s music career started on a heartfelt note. She started taking music seriously in 2016, releasing original songs on Soundcloud and Spotify. Positive feedback from listeners encouraged her to keep going.
“When I started to hear back from people saying ‘I really felt this lyric, it stuck with me all day,’ that’s when I knew I’d tapped into something that provided an opportunity to connect with people all over the world through something so personal and vulnerable,” Green says. “And that, for me, was my music.”
Green’s admiration for Cab’Ral and his team is what kick-started this collaboration. Cab’Ral was one of the first local artists that Green followed on Instagram, and she has been in awe of his work ever since. Having met only a year ago through Cab’Ral’s manager Nick Leeb, the two plan on collaborating again following their upcoming show.
Beyond her concert with Cab’Ral, Green has other collaborative projects in the works, including releasing a single called “I think he wants her in a white dress.” Green’s music infuses a passion for mixing different mediums of art as well. She hopes to work with Edmonton’s creative community to publish several visual projects to accompany the single.
“I like to try and step into a character when I write. I think that gives me the freedom to feel anything.” Green says. “I’ll give [collaborator] Brandon Kaiser a lyric, or he will give me a riff, and the other will fill in the gap, and that’s how we get the music in its full form.”
