When it’s so cold outside that even the penguins can’t handle it, and midterms are just a few short weeks away, there’s only one thing to do: find a heated indoor location and hit the books. Thankfully, if there’s one thing campus has, it’s places to study. If you’re looking for a cozy spot to curl up with your textbook, here are five places you should check out.
The fireplace in SUB
If staying warm is your main concern, sitting beside a blazing indoor flame is a good place to start. Surrounded by armchairs, the fireplace in SUB has room for you and an entire crew of study buddies. SUB is open 24 hours a day, making this spot one of the most readily accessible. And if you need some extra fuel, the food court is just a few short steps away.
The fourth and fifth floors of Rutherford North
For a lot of us, a quiet atmosphere while studying is absolutely essential. If the noise level of SUB is too much for you, Rutherford North is your best friend. The fourth and fifth levels of the building are quiet or silent zones, and there’s an abundance of comfortable seating. Best of all, heat rises throughout the building, making this location nice and warm.
The Harry Potter room, Rutherford South
If you like libraries, but getting lost in the bookshelves isn’t your thing, the silent study hall (or “Harry Potter room”) on the second floor of Rutherford South is your best bet. The beautiful architecture and peaceful atmosphere make this a relaxing spot to hit the books. It’s also very well heated, to the point that wearing a sweater in there becomes uncomfortable after a while.
GoodEarth coffeehouse
This spot is technically just off campus, but sometimes you need a change of scenery. GoodEarth is located on 112 Street, just across from the university. With a wide menu range and friendly waitstaff, GoodEarth is ideal if you feel like escaping campus for a little while and treating yourself to a latte.
ALES atrium
Despite not being a greenhouse anymore, the ALES atrium on the second floor is still a great bet if you’re looking to get out of the cold. Its glass walls and ceiling and the array of chairs and tables make the atrium brightly lit and inviting. As a bonus, the atrium still has seasonally changing greenery, a refreshing change of pace from the bare trees outside.
