Statement: 2024 UASU elections coverage
In the 2024 UASU elections, The Gateway will be running a referendum to create a DFU. Here is our statement on our coverage.
In the 2024 University of Alberta Students’ Union (UASU) elections, The Gateway is running a designated fee unit (DFU) campaign.
Historically, The Gateway elected to not cover itself beyond a Q&A article to promote impartiality. This meant that any remarks made by or to The Gateway in any election forums went uncovered in reporting. As a result, there was a lack of transparency and information in The Gateway’s coverage, which disadvantaged students. Because The Gateway is students’ number one source of information regarding UASU elections, we have made the decision to cover our campaign.
Every year, The Gateway’s coverage of UASU elections includes forum recaps, opinion columns, Q&As, and a results night article. This coverage is written and edited by volunteers and staff. In order to limit further conflicts of interest, volunteers and staff involved in election coverage are separate from those running The Gateway’s DFU campaign.
As well, the campaign will be covered in a strict environment that still strives to promote impartiality, transparency, and fairness, as is the case for all of our coverage. We have created a Conflict of Interest Plan that details The Gateway’s editorial and publishing coverage guidelines that will be followed from the beginning to the end of the UASU elections.
Any concerns or complaints about The Gateway’s election coverage should be directed to the Editor-in-Chief, Katie Teeling, who can be reached at [email protected]. Any concerns about The Gateway’s DFU campaign should be directed to the undergraduate campaign manager, Emily Williams. She can be reached at [email protected].
We thank students for their understanding.
