I have no idea why the bottle is shaped like a grenade, but it’s awesome. That feeling of happy confusion defines Mickey’s; it’s a brew that will raise a lot of questions. For example: why make it a glass bottle of it’s the exact same volume as a can? Why is there a picture riddle on the inside of every bottle cap? And why is this beer so cheap when it’s so delicious?
The pour gives you exactly what you would expect from an average ale, straw coloured with ton of bubbles, and a head that doesn’t seem to want to stick around. The nose and taste are defined by an abundance of malt, and little else. The finish provides a smooth aftertaste that sticks around just long enough that you’ll want to take another sip. This brew will probably not surprise you, it exactly what you expect.
Mickey’s succeeds as a brew that would normally fall into the ranks of the mediocre, destined to comparisons to Canadian or Coors. But something about Mickey’s makes it special. It could be the aforementioned charms found in the funky bottle or the riddles on every bottle cap, or it could be the great price . Coming in a sturdy box of twelve bottles, Mickey’s punches in at just under $30; not a bad price point for the thirsty student looking for a little post-midterm indulgence.
Mickey’s is overwhelmingly average, but its charming features push it over the edge and into the territory of decent beer. It’s your regular everyday brew, but for the price, it just may become one of your favourites.
