In our biweekly column Social Intercourse, we share our picks for notable things happening on campus and in Edmonton. Check out all these amazing local events!
What: Edmonton Poetry Festival
When: April 2 – 27
Where: Various locations
Admission: Free (some events require RSVP)
Originally founded in 2006 by Alice Major, the Edmonton Poetry Festival involves creators in Edmonton to “celebrate poetry in all its forms.” Throughout the month of April there are numerous events happening across the city, from book launches to open mics to poetry-writing opportunities. Some of the featured speakers are University of Alberta instructors, as well as other well-known poets. The Edmonton Poetry Festival is a can’t-miss month-long event!
What: Felice Noir – Open Mic
When: March 26 at 6:00 p.m..
Where: Felice Cafe
Admission: Free (reservation required)
On the last Wednesday of each month, Felice Cafe hosts its Felice Noir “after dark” events. It aims to support and showcase local talent through open mic nights. Additionally, attendants can expect a number of performances from music to poetry, ranging from multiple genres. You can either sign up to participate, or just go and watch!
What: Gateway to Cinema: The Substance
When: March 27 at 6:30 p.m..
Where: Metro Cinema
Admission: Free for students with valid student I.D.
Gateway to Cinema is The Gateway’s partnership with Metro Cinema that provides free movies to students. This month’s feature film is The Substance (2024), a horror and sci-fi directed by Coralie Fargeat. The Substance follows Elisabeth Sparkle (Demi Moore), a once A-list celebrity who is fired from her aerobics TV show. She is enticed by a miraculous drug that will make her into a younger version of herself (Margaret Qualley). What could possibly go wrong?
What: interlude
When: March 25 – April 5
Where: Fine Arts Building (FAB) gallery
Admission: Free
interlude is the newest exhibition at the FAB gallery, put on by the U of A’s Bachelor of Design graduating class. This exhibit represents the space of the graduates where they transition from being in school, to moving on to their next stage of life. It is “a moment to stop, reflect on the past, and consider the future.”
What: The Laramie Project
When: April 4 – 12
Where: Timms Centre for the Arts
Admission: $14 for students
The final production of Studio Theatre’s 75th season is The Laramie Project, which explores the murder of University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard. Shepard was murdered because of his sexual orientation. Directed by Melanie Dreyer-Lude, The Laramie Project is premiering in collaboration with Edmonton Queer History Project (EQHP) — which aims to tell Edmonton’s queer history and stories. The performance on April 8 will feature a talkback session with EQHP.
