Album review: ‘When a Thought Grows Wings’

Li is back with her sophomore album to show her most authentic self.

Toronto-based singer Luna Li returns with her second album When a Thought Grows Wings. Featuring 11 songs, the album is alternative and indie-sounding. The album’s poetry gives the listener a glimpse into her world, connecting them with nature. The instruments used throughout the album along with Li’s vocals draw you in and create a soothing atmosphere.

Confusion Song” was an immediate stand-out for me. It is very relaxing and easy to listen to, as the lyrics tie together so well. The song talks about moving on fast after a breakup, and the end of the relationship (“You’re falling back, I’m running way ahead”). Li is trying to convince her ex that it’s for the best that they’re not together anymore (“I thought we were taking space / Can love regenerate?”). This is a beautiful take on something that should be sad. It was truly such a soothing listening experience.

Another favourite of mine is her third track “Minnie Says (Would You Be My),” as this song transports you. The instruments and the harmonies are so simple, but they add so many layers to the song. The first verse drew me in from the start, and she holds you for the entire song. However, the best part of the song is the instrumental break, where Li captures the listeners with her flute solo.

Track four, “Golden Hour,” is a masterpiece. There is so much world-building and the lyrics are so beautiful. Everything fits and is pieced together perfectly in this song with the instruments, the lyrics, and the world she creates. The song opens with a soft piano, which was more than enough to draw me in and make me focus on the song. I noticed that the song seemed like it was going off of her opening song, building on what falling in love is like for her.

The last track “Bon Voyage” has an arrangement that blends well with Li’s voice and the additional harmonies. She conveys that she is ready to let go of her past and move forward into the future (“Into the sweet conclusion / Can a thought grow wings and ascend in turn?”). The song cohesively ties the entire album together, both musically and lyrically.

Li’s storytelling and the addition of the flute and harp bring the album to life. These components transport you to her world and make your emotions run wild. This album was truly such a soothing listen and I know for a fact I will be listening to it daily.
