In our biweekly column Social Intercourse, we share our picks for notable things happening on campus and in Edmonton. Check out all these amazing local events!


What: Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival
When: August 15 – 25
Where: Venues vary
Admission: Approximately $20 per show

The iconic Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival is back for its 43rd year. The festival presents 216 productions across 38 venues in the city. With it being North America’s longest running Fringe Theatre Festival, there is so much to offer. Enjoy multi-faceted performances from COWbaret to Practically Perfect Pitch to Who’s Afraid of Winnie the Pooh? Support the city’s theatre scene by attending the Fringe, and enjoy some entertaining shows.

What: Edmonton Mural Festival
When: August 15 – September 15
Where: Locations vary
Admission: Free

The Edmonton Mural Festival is back for 2024, and has worked year-round to cultivate numerous murals across the city. The goal of the festival is to uplift local Albertan artists and honour the diverse art in the city. Attendees can use the mural map to see the numerous murals and large art installations across the city. Some of the artists include Jill Stanton, who has painted murals for several festivals, and Sowl, who blends his heritage into his work. Enjoy the multiple murals across the city during this month-long festival.

What: Grindstone Karaoke Thursdays
When: August 15 at 10:00 p.m.
Where: Grindstone Theatre
Admission: Free (RSVP required)

The Grindstone Theatre is Edmonton’s hub for emerging artists. It hosts a number of shows such as improv nights, stand-up comedy, and more. Every Thursday night, it’s hosting karaoke — a fun and carefree way to spend the night. So whether you’re going for a birthday party with friends, or to show off your stellar pipes, karaoke is the perfect Thursday night event.

What: Pride Short Film Community Screening
When: August 22
Where: Muttart Theatre, Stanley A. Milner Library
Admission: Free

The Edmonton Short Film Festival (ESFF) showcases local independent filmmakers that are “outside of the ‘normal’ festival market.” It aims to promote local film content and enhance the film community. On August 22, ESFF is hosting the Pride Short Film Community Screening, which will present films by local, Queer artists. Head down to the Stanley A. Milner library to support Edmonton’s film community.

What: Where Dark Things Dwell
When: May 31 – September 22
Where: Fort Edmonton Park
Admission: $35

“Where Dark Things Dwell” is Fort Edmonton Park‘s newest interactive experience. The outdoor escape room is an eerie experience where participants get to become villagers in the curse-ridden village of Edmonton. As part of the game, participants must find the powerful relic that will break the curse. Attendees get broken up into teams of four in this spooky immersive experience.
