12 Days of Holiday Movies: Let It Snow

Welcome to day two of The Gateway’s 12 Days of Holiday Movies! Every weekday from Dec. 14 to Dec. 29, we’ll be sharing a holiday movie that makes us laugh, cry, and do everything in between. Come along and find the next movie to add to your holiday watchlist!

Released on Netflix in 2019, this holiday romance and drama is an adaptation of John Green, Maureen Johnson, and Lauren Miracle’s 2008 novel Let It Snow.

If you have read the book, you would probably agree with me that the story was cheated by the movie. With very different character lines and events, the film doesn’t even seem to have been created with the novel in mind.

That said, the movie itself is a comforting holiday film that will have you smiling, laughing and of course, cringing, because what is a Netflix holiday movie without some cringe? Extremely cliche yet relatable, Let It Snow deals with teenage relationships and friendships, and understanding sexuality and family life. The character crossovers make the film an exciting and satisfying watch.

The most notable aspect of Let It Snow is its diversity and representation. With varying faces from the LGBTQ+ community, faces of colour, and everything in-between, audiences can feel represented. Media representation is important because it helps people feel inspired, confident and like their voices are being heard.

Compared to other Netflix original holiday movies, Let It Snow is by far on the better end and it’s a nice to treat to watch after (or in-between) exams.
