Varsity sports roundup: Bears hockey mauls Cougars

Pandas Soccer

The Pandas had their five-game winning streak snapped this past weekend, but were still able to pick up points in their road trip through Saskatchewan to help in their playoff push. The Pandas were able to edge past the Regina Cougars 2-1 on Saturday afternoon, aided by Julia Ignacio’s tie-breaking goal in the 56th minute. Sunday was a different story however, as the Pandas fell victim to three first half goals against the Saskatchewan Huskies in a 4-1 loss. Ignacio registered the only tally of the game for the Pandas. Despite the loss, the Pandas are in a good position for Canada West playoffs, sitting five points clear of the sixth place Thompson Rivers Wolfpack, who occupy the final playoff spot in the West division. The Pandas now head into the final week of the season, looking forward to matchups with the aforementioned Wolfpack, and the UBC Okanagan Heat. — Zach Borutski

Bears Soccer

The Bears split their two games on their Calgary trip this past weekend, falling 2-1 in their opening game to the Calgary Dinos, but then rebounding to beat the Mount Royal Cougars 5-2. The Dinos have handed the Bears their only two losses this year, taking a hotly contested game with a goal in the 80th minute with a Dominic Russo tiebreaking goal. The Bears seemed undeterred by the loss, as they were able to play an excellent game against the Cougars — the team closest to them in the standings so far this year. C.J. Gilroy tallied two goals in the win, while Niko Cuglieta and Stefan Bozunovic also added goals. Mohamed Teliani added two goals on the weekend to bring his season total to 12, which sits second in the league. Bears Hockey

The Bears looked in top form this weekend, as they took both games from the Regina Cougars, winning 9-2 on Friday, and 6-1 on Saturday. Both Jordan Hickmott and Kruise Reddick registered three points in the win on Friday night, as the Bears peppered the Cougars all night, outshooting them 66-24. The game was actually tied 2-2 after the first period, but the Bears grabbed the lead just 2:05 into the second period, and never looked back after that. Saturday night was more of the same, as this time it was Stephane Legault and Jamie Crooks leading the scoring charge for the Bears, each registering three assists in the 6-1 victory. After that offensive outburst, the Bears now lead Canada West in goals with 19, and will look to keep the momentum rolling in their home opener this weekend against the Mount Royal Cougars. – Zach Borutski

Pandas Rugby

The Pandas rugby team finished the season on a high note this past weekend, shutting out the UBC Thunderbirds 26-0 on Friday, and beating the Victoria Vikes 34-28 on Sunday. It was a dominating performance against the Thunderbirds, with Julia Goss scoring a pair of tries, Rebecca Fairbairn adding three conversions, and the Pandas defence holding the T-Birds at bay for the majority of the game. Sunday’s game was a closer match, but the Pandas were buoyed by an excellent first half that saw them outscore the Vikes 17-7. Elizabeth Steele led the scoring for the Pandas with two tries, while Amee Svatos, Amy Spears, Amanda Smith and Aline Wicklum all added tries of their own. The Pandas will now play on home turf for the first time this season, as they host the Vikes in their Canada West semifinal, which takes place on Friday, Oct. 23. — Zach Borutski
