SU moves ahead with new capital plan and sustainability fund

After two past attempts, a new capital plan and sustainability fund for the SU will be put to referendum in the SU elections

Students’ Council approved the new referendum question which will ask students if they approve of paying $25 a semester to fund a new capital plan initiative addressing deferred maintenance.

Called the University of Alberta Students’ Union Sustainability and Capital Fund, the new initiative will be put forward for student approval during the next SU executive elections in the winter semester. The capital plan fund will provide allow for the renovation of student spaces like the Students’ Union Building.

The student-supported fund will finance ongoing major capital renewal of Students’ Union spaces and sustainability initiatives. Examples of projects include Myer Horowitz Theatre renewal or a solar panel array onto of the Students’ Union Building.

The motion to approve the wording and merit of the referendum question passed at Students’ Council on December 3.

Only one councillor voted against the motion.
