SU Elections 2026: VPOF race results announced, complaint resolved

On March 9, Megan Garbutt, chief returning officer (CRO), released the ruling regarding the vice president (operations and finance) (VPOF) race.

After a delay, the results of the vice-president (operations and finance) (VPOF) race were announced.

Logan West won the VPOF race with 50 per cent of the vote in the first round of voting. The only other candidate, Armaan Singh, received 36 per cent of the vote.

The delay was due to a pending ruling over a complaint against West.

During the election results event on March 5, the winner of the VPOF race was not announced. Megan Garbutt, the chief returning officer (CRO), said that the result would not be announced due to a pending ruling, which has now been released.

The Elections Office released the ruling regarding the VPOF race on March 9.

An anonymous complaint alleged that campaign messages promoting West were posted on Discord servers during the election process.

These messages were sent to 21 channels, each with thousands of members, on March 5.

According to the election nomination package, campaigning on Discord is strictly prohibited. Candidates campaigning on social media is limited to Instagram, and the Elections Office must pre-approve all materials.

The Elections office contacted West shortly after the complaint was filed and West denied any awareness of the messages being sent.

According to the CRO ruling, West was entirely co-operative with the investigation and provided all the information required of her.

The CRO determined that there was no evidence connecting the Discord messages to West or their campaign, and that students cannot be prohibited from discussing the election online.

No penalties were applied to West.

The ruling stated that “assessing a fine based on this complaint would set a dangerous precedent for future elections, as candidates may attempt to get their opponents disqualified by sending messages like this one.”

West will start her term on May 1.

West provided a comment to The Gateway over email.

“I am deeply grateful to students for entrusting me with the privilege of serving them for another term. I look forward to delivering on my vision for the SU on their behalf,” West said.
