Hobby Hole: Journalling

A helpful, rewarding hobby that is more than “Dear Diary.”

Wherever I may go, you can be sure my journal will be nearby.

Journalling has become a daily practice in my life. It brings me joy, clarity, and tranquility. There are many different types of journalling, which makes it a hobby that is easily malleable to any person’s goals or desires. Here are some of the types of journalling I practice, and why I enjoy it or find it beneficial.

Gratitude journalling

When life becomes overwhelming, it is easy to lose sight of the goodness that surrounds you. Gratitude journalling calls you to think of the things in your life that you are grateful for and to bring them to paper so you can focus on the positive aspects of your being. Write about the people in your life you love, your favourite foods, the clothes on your body, and the roof over your head. Big or small, writing down the parts of your life you are grateful for helps you recognize and grant space for the positivity in your life!

Goals journalling

Goal journalling helps make dreams become reality — when you write down your goals, they become tangible. Write down what you hope to accomplish, how you’re going to achieve it, and what steps you need to take daily to get there. Picture how you’re going to feel when you reach your goal and write it down as a reminder as to why you’re working so hard. Take time to track your progress and celebrate milestones in your journal so you can look back at all you’ve achieved along the way.

Evening reflection journalling

Taking time to write and reflect on the day and its events is a great way to wind down, offload mental clutter, and clear your mind before a good night’s sleep. Evening reflection journalling calls you to assess your thoughts, feelings, and actions from the day. This can help you process the stressors from the day in a healthy way. It creates a moment of stillness and focus at the end of a busy day.

No matter the way you practice it, journalling is a hobby that offers numerous benefits for your well-being, and is a great way to prioritize yourself among the chaos of everyday life. It creates a space where you can be unapologetically yourself. Where you can reflect on the past and picture the future. Where you can focus on what matters most to you. If you’ve got a pen and spare notebook sitting around, give journalling a shot!
