In our biweekly column Social Intercourse, we share our picks for notable things happening on campus and in Edmonton. Check out all these amazing local events!


What: Chinatown Dining Week
When: January 16 – 26
Where: Various locations
Admission: $10 – $20

For the eighth year, Chinatown is showcasing its delicious variety of restaurants with various specials to promote its many cuisines! With places like Asian Express Hotpot offering a $20 lunch special, to Tea Bar Cafe and their $10 bubble tea and bubble waffle combo, there are so many places to try!

What: cop city swagger book talk
When: January 15 at 7:00 p.m..
Where: Paper Birch Books
Admission: Free (accepting donations)

cop city swagger is the latest poetry book from Vancouver-based poet Mercedes Eng. This event invites community conversation about “gentrification, policing, colonialism, and alternatives to these forms of structural violence in Chinatown,” coupled with readings from cop city swagger with Eng in attendance. This event is hosted by Paper Birch Books and aiya collective.

What: Deep Freeze: A Byzantine Winter Festival
When: January 18 – 19
Where: 90 – 95 Street & 118 Avenue
Admission: Free

Deep Freeze: A Byzantine Winter Festival is back for another year! Hosted by Arts on the Ave, the winter festival offers an array of art installations, performances, delicious food, and more. This year’s theme is Barnyard Blitz, which explores Alberta’s agricultural history.

What: Gateway to Cinema: Anora
When: January 16 at 6:30 p.m..
Where: Metro Cinema
Admission: Free for students with valid student I.D.

Gateway to Cinema is The Gateway’s partnership with Metro Cinema that provides free movies to students. This month’s film, Anora (2024), follows a young stripper from Brooklyn who falls in love with the son of a Russian oligarch. However, everything goes awry when his father shows up in New York to stop the marriage. 

What: Zachary Lucky performance
When: January 17 at 8:00 p.m..
Where: The Aviary
Admission: $20 advance, $25 at the door

Zachary Lucky is a Saskatoon-based folk and country artist who is currently on his tour across Canada. He is making a stop in Edmonton to perform songs from his latest album The Wind. Head over to the Aviary for a night of country music and fun!
