Oh, the weather outside is frightful, but I am a student who has been cooped up writing final exams and papers. I want to get out and do things.
As the semester comes to a close, students around campus will be closing their laptops and swapping study time for play time — in the dead of winter. But that’s okay! There are still plenty of winter activities to occupy your time. In fact, here is a list of my top five winter activities for you to partake in over this winter break.
5. Do-it-yourself ice sculptures
Sure, you could walk through an exquisite display of professionally-made ice sculptures. Or you could make them yourself!
There are plenty of fun ice molds available both online and in-stores. Collect some of your favourites, fill them with water, and set them outside — as long as it’s below zero degrees Celsius — or in your freezer until frozen. Once they’ve hardened, pop out your ice pieces and get to crafting your own ice sculpture! If you’re feeling competitive, gather your friends and see whose creation is the best.
Don’t feel like buying ice molds? No problem. There are plenty of other resources you can use to make your ice pieces. Some fun ones include old containers, hollowed-out fruits, cookie cutters, and balloons. The more creative, the better!
4. Organize a treasure hunt in the snow
Hear me out — think Easter Egg Hunt, but in the snow!
A snow treasure hunt is a great way to get your friends and family together to engage with one another and nature. This winter activity can be as easy or as complicated as you would like to make it. Simply hide trinkets and treasures in the snow and see who finds what, or come up with a series of clues, riddles, or instructions for everyone to follow in their search for the treasure.
You can also keep it close to home and enjoy the nature around you. Or you can go out and explore new environments — you’re sure to find more than just the intended hidden treasures.
3. Find a new book to read at a new café
Not keen on the cold outdoors? Cozy up inside with a new book over the holidays!
All of the downtime over the winter break is perfect for digging into a new novel. Stop by your public library, visit a local bookstore, or make use of the holiday sales and grab yourself something new to read. Extra points if it’s winter or holiday themed!
Speaking of holiday themed, the perfect environment to crack open your new book is at a café you’ve never been to before. You can try any new holiday drinks and treats they may be offering! Grab something pepperminty and immerse yourself in your reading.
2. Attend a winter festival or market
You don’t always have to be the one orchestrating the seasonal cheer either. There are plenty of organized winter festivals and markets that are perfect for embracing the spirit of winter.
Edmonton offers an array of light displays, such as Zoominescence and Glow Edmonton. There’s also markets, like the Merry Makers Market and the Edmonton Christmas Market, and events, including Winter Wagon Rides. Not to mention, there are also a number of Christmas performances at the Winspear Centre. These are all great winter activities for celebrating the season!
Local winter festivals are also a great opportunity to support local vendors, businesses, and talent, as well as connect with the community. It’s fun to get out there and celebrate the winter season with fellow Edmontonians!
1. Outdoor ice skating
Coming in at number one, ice skating is a winter classic. You see it in every holiday movie, show, card, and commercial, and rightfully so!
Ice skating is a timeless tradition and a great opportunity to get moving in the great outdoors! If you don’t own a pair of skates, look at renting, borrowing, or buying a pair second-hand so you can get out and enjoy the fun. Not the best on blades? If permitted, look at using a chair, broom, or partner to help with balance as you learn how to maneuver on your skates.
While ice rinks are great, nothing beats skating on natural ice. If you can, look to make a trip to any of the beautiful lakes across Alberta for a magical, serene, authentic experience in the crisp fresh air that embodies the essence of winter and creates lasting memories for all!
