Rodion KutsaievIt’s an evening after a long day of studying. Your back is aching due to the staggering weight of your unnecessarily full backpack of things you didn’t even use, while your stomach is clenched because you forgot to pack the lunch that is waiting on your kitchen table. So instead you ate the lone crushed granola bar at the bottom of your bag that you convinced yourself in your faint, tired memory that you checked the expiry date before you ate it, and now you are oh so desperate for a nice cold can of pop. So, you walk to the nearest convenience store to buy a drink. As you take a sip, to your horror, you accidentally bought sparkling water.
For most, the accidental surprise of sparkling water instead of pop is enough to make their faces twist into disgust. However, I’d like to convince you that it is not as bad as it seems.
It is easy to jump on the bandwagon of hating because, as most like to say, it tastes like TV static. However it, like technology, has certainly updated with the times. It is no longer just those fancy green bottles of elegant font for distinguished older adults. Now it’s been rejuvenated into aesthetic, flavour-filled, social media-friendly cans. There are many options as you make the change to sparkling water. Some great options, with lots of flavour, are Perrier Forever Raspberry with Rose or, if you are really feeling tropical or adventurous, Thirsty Buddha has sparkling coconut water with fruit flavours that taste amazing.
Sparkling water is better for you than soda. We all know the dangers of pop, which is why sparkling water is a better option. It simply creates a community of healthier options, which in turn can support choices for a healthier lifestyle. And for those who argue that everyone can just drink diet sodas, note that they also have similar effects to regular soda. Instead, let everyone be a part of the team and drink a quick convenient natural fruit flavoured sparkling water all together.
From finding a new brand that has similar yet healthier tastes to your favourites or just simply trying something new, sparkling water truly has it all. Things certainly changed over the years, so let sparkling water change too. Instead of jeering at people drinking it from behind your big brands, cheer on those with their AHA’s and Perrier’s as you go out, because maybe one day, you’ll be right there with them.
And if you thought you saw me drinking a soda on campus, no you didn’t.
