In our biweekly column Social Intercourse, we share our picks for notable things happening on campus and in Edmonton. Check out all these amazing local events!


What: Decades Night Market
When: July 17 from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.
Where: OEX 2 Building
Admission: $8.69

Get access to a curated selection of vintage clothing and guzzle some dirty soda at the Decades Night Market! The market will feature piles of vintage clothes, a retro photo booth, DJ sets, and tooth gems. Spend your evening browsing the aisles and taking in the atmosphere as you munch on some cake and charcuterie.

What: Family Drugs Gallery: Opening Reception
When: July 18 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Where: Family Drugs Gallery
Admission: Free

Attend the opening of a brand new artist-run centre at the Family Drugs Gallery. Go see the inaugural exhibition, Meet the Family, and an open studio. Enjoy live music and refreshments while you explore, and meet some of the organizers of the space. If you love art and supporting local artists spaces, definitely check this one out.

What: Sounds from the Valley: Music and Poetry
When: July 21 at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Snow Valley Ski Club
Admission: Free

In celebration of summer, Snow Valley is having a free concert and poetry night every Tuesday! The next one will be on July 21, and feature music, readings, and visual art. Edmontonian singer-songwriter l.n. baba will be providing the music for the evening, bringing with him his signature “oddball” songwriting. Albertan writers Carly Olafson and Erica To will be present for some poetry reading, and local artist Karen Tran will be there selling some crochet treasures. Head over to the valley, soak in the warmth, and enjoy some art!

What: Ekphrastic Writing Workshop
When: July 25 at 1:00 p.m.
Where: Latitude 53
Admission: Free (registration required)

Spend the afternoon with Edmonton-based writer Jason Purcell and learn the ins and outs of ekphrastic writing. Meaning “a vivid description of … a work of art,” ekphrastic writing emphasizes the human need to write about and discuss art. In this workshop, pick a piece of art that interests you and share it with the group through both writing and discussion. If you’re interested in writing poetry or fiction, this workshop is for you.

Where: Edmonton EXPO Centre & Exhibition Grounds
Admission: $18.85

One of the biggest events of the summer is back! Go to KDays and browse the endless stalls of crazy carnival food or check out the midway. Plus, general admission includes access to concerts. Go see big names like Peach Pit or The Beaches, or local acts like Flowshine or Robin Cisek.
