U of A students Howes and Seto see wins at recent golf invitationals

Kalee Seto and Ethan Howes secured wins in the last three invitationals leading up to the 2024 Canada West Championship.

After securing team and individual titles at the University of Alberta Golf Invitational, Kalee Seto and Ethan Howes both saw wins at the University of Lethbridge and University of Calgary golf invitationals.

Kalee Seto is a second-year kinesiology student. She has competed with the Pandas golf team for two years. Ethan Howes is a third-year transfer student from the University of Minnesota Crookston where he played golf for three years. This is his first year with the Golden Bears golf team

The U of A invitational saw both players capture individual titles

Both Seto and Howes captured individual titles at the U of A invitational on September 8 and 9 at The Links in Spruce Grove. Howes had the lowest score on the field with eight birdies and three eagles. The U of A invitational was his first Canada West tournament, which he ultimately won by 11 shots.

“I finally had a couple days where the game clicked, for pretty much the whole time. I can look back and say that I’m proud of how I played. [Hopefully] I can repeat that more than once for the fall [semester] coming up,” Howes said.

Seto secured her second university career win by 13 shots. She parred six-straight holes in the final nine holes of the 18 hole course.

“It feels really fulfilling. It makes me happy and makes me proud, because we’re helping represent the team and getting more recognition,” Seto said.

The U of A invitational was the opening tournament of 2024. It was followed by the U of L invitational and the U of C invitational. At the U of L invitational at Paradise Canyon on September 15 and 16, Seto secured another individual title. The Pandas secured another team title as well. Seto captured the individual title by 12 shots, making it her third university career win.

The latest tournament was held September 22 and 23 at McKenzie Meadows Golf Club in Calgary for the U of C invitational. Here, Seto secured individual titles once again. This makes two wins for Howes and three straight wins for Seto in the tournament.

The next tournament for Golden Bears and Pandas golf is the 2024 Canada West Championship

The last event for the Fall Golf season will be the 2024 Canada West Championship. It will be hosted by the University of British Columbia from October 7 to 8.

Seto will be working on her swing and balancing school with golf. Howes will “stick his head down and keep practicing.”

“I try not to have too many expectations with myself. If I surpass them early on, I kind of get in my own head. I let myself play the best golf I can and go from there,” Howes said.

“I am just trying to have fun and keep a positive attitude. We have a new coach this year, Liz Carr, and she’s amazing. She helped a lot during the [U of A Invitational]. [She] encouraged us and helped us with technicalities here and there,” Seto said.
