In our biweekly column Social Intercourse, we share our picks for notable things happening on campus and in Edmonton. Check out all these amazing local events!


What: Edmonton Short Film Festival
When: October 26 – 27
Where: Landmark Cinemas 9 Edmonton City Centre
Admission: $15 – $30

The Edmonton Short Film Festival (ESFF) is an event that showcases independent short films. The ESFF gala promotes shorts from Alberta filmmakers up to 15 minutes in length. Additionally, the Long Shorts program showcases films from all over the world up to 60 minutes in length. The festival runs for two days with various galas and screenings. The films are also available online to watch.

What: In Search of Professor Precarious
When: October 23 at 4:00 p.m..
Where: Myer Horowitz Theatre
Admission: Free

The University of Alberta Students’ Union (UASU) regularly shows free movies to students at the Myer Horowitz Theatre. Together the UASU and the Association of Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA) are partnering to show In Search of Professor Precarious, to raise awareness about unfair treatment of academic staff. The film is written, produced, and directed by Gerry Potter — a playwright and former U of A drama instructor.

What: Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show
When: October 18 – November 3 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m..
Where: Grindstone Theatre
Admission: $43 – $69

In anticipation of Halloween, there’s no better way to get into the spooky spirit then by watching a performance of the Rocky Horror Show. This production features the well-known characters of Brad, Janet, and Frank ‘n’ Furter, all played by local Edmonton actors. Additionally, after the performance on October 25 there will be a Science Fiction Double Feature after-party at the Pendennis Building.

What: Valley – Water the Flowers, Pray for a Garden Tour
When: October 26 at 7:00 p.m..
Where: Midway Music Hall
Admission: $38

Valley is an indie band from Toronto, who recently released their latest album Water the Flowers, Pray for a Garden. They’re best known for the their hit songs “Like 1999,” “There’s Still A Light In The House,” and “Oh shit…are we in love?” The band has been nominated for two JUNO awards, and the SOCAN Songwriting Prize. They will be performing at Midway Music Hall in Edmonton as part of their album’s tour.

What: We Made This Mostly at Home with Stuff We Already Had in Our Apartment
When: October 8 – November 2
Where: FAB gallery
Admission: Free

The newest exhibit from FAB gallery is about how “we live our lives and experience the world through materials, objects, things.” The objects reflect how we think of ourselves, and how they help us to navigate our own world. The exhibit is curated by Chloë Lum & Yannick Desranleau, whose work focuses on various mediums and multidisciplinary themes.
