Six Students’ Council vacancies filled, nine elected to GFC in 2024 UASU by-election
Three seats in Students' Council still remain vacant.
From October 2 to 3, students voted in a by-election to fill vacancies on the University of Alberta Students’ Union (UASU) Students’ Council and General Faculties Council (GFC). Students elected six new councillors to Students’ Council, and nine representatives to GFC.
The election results will be ratified at the upcoming Students’ Council meeting on October 22. The Elections Office did not provide The Gateway with the turnout number in time for publication.
Students’ Council fills six seats
Students’ Council oversees the UASU. Those on Students’ Council are responsible for ensuring that the UASU fulfills its mandate.
Prior to the election, Students’ Council had seven vacant seats. Currently, council has three vacant seats as two science councillors, Raiyan Abdulrub and Jana Sharaby, have been replaced. The current vacant seats on council are in open studies; kinesiology, sport & recreation; and pharmacy.
The seats filled were in education; law; medicine and dentistry; Native studies; and science.

Nine representatives elected to GFC
Made up of 158 members, GFC includes all university vice-presidents, all faculty deans, as well as professors, students, librarians, and academic and non-academic staff.
There are 39 undergraduate student members. Nine students were elected to represent students from their faculties on GFC. Some students elected to the Students’ Council are also serving as GFC representatives.
