Notes from Council: Council approves first principles of open academic resources policy

Student Legal Services' presentation on Protest and Dissent Policy was tabled until the next council meeting.

“Notes from Council” is The Gateway’s ongoing series of recaps of noteworthy items from Students’ Council meetings.

At the October 5 meeting of the University of Alberta Students’ Union (UASU) Students’ Council, the motions to approve the first principles of the open academic resources policy and amendments to Bill Two and Bill Three were all carried unanimously. The meeting took place at Campus Saint-Jean (CSJ).

The motion for Student Legal Services (SLS) to present on their Protest and Dissent Policy was tabled until the next council meeting.

Augustana councillor Nate Goetz presented the first principles of the open academic resources policy. Goetz said that the expired UASU academic resources policy has “significant overlap” with the UASU open education policy. The new open academic resources policy will combine the two policies, Goetz said.

Vice-president (operations and finance) Levi Flaman presented Bill Two, amending bylaw 130 to reflect new positions within the UASU.

Business councillor Owen Pasay presented Bill Three, amending bylaw 600. The amendment promotes “the need to incorporate accessibility into the activities and social deliverables of the UASU and associate DFUs,” according to Pasay.

Vice-president (external) Abdul Abbasi asked Pasay if the bill would apply to all DFUs. Pasay replied that it would.

Flaman added that the bill expands on existing UASU bilingualism legislation by “encompassing accessibility concerns into what’s already written.”

Additionally, engineering councillor Michael Chang and agricultural, life, and environmental sciences (ALES) councillor Katie Tamsett moved to appoint Noelle Scrivener and Aribah Khan to the Students’ Union Building (SUB) Art Committee as students-at-large.

All four motions passed unanimously.
