In our biweekly column Social Intercourse, we share our picks for notable things happening on campus and in Edmonton. Check out all these amazing local events!

What: Fruit Loop Pride – Downtown Drag Lunchhour Quickie
When: June 9 and 16, 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Where: Michael Phair Park
Admission: Free to attend

In celebration of Pride Month, the Fruit Loop Society of Alberta and Party Queens are hosting a free drag show downtown. The first performance will be hosted by Venus and Gemma Nye, and the second will be hosted by Stretcher Hymen featuring the talents of many other performers.

What: Sustainival Edmonton
When: June 8 to 11
Where: Fan Park, ICE District
Admission: Free to enter, all day ride passes $38.55

This unique festival is free to enter and includes community booths, educational activities, and games. Tickets can be purchased on the event website for rides running on completely renewable energy. Visitors will also have the opportunity to play the Green Beast Eco-Challenge for the chance to win prizes and learn about the environment.

What: Nextfest 2023
When: Until June 11
Where: The Roxy Theatre
Admission: Varies

Nextfest is an annual showcase of Edmonton’s community of emerging artists that celebrates creativity and new ideas. Featuring over 50 events and 500 artists in a variety of disciplines, this inclusive festival encourages young creatives and entertains audiences.

What: Growing Pains – VASA Exhibition
When: Until June 16
Where: dc3 art project

The Visual Arts Students’ Association from the University of Alberta is showcasing some previously exhibited and new work at dc3 art projects. This show displays the artists’ reflections on their creative growth and is the first exhibition of VASA outside of the U of A community.

What: Outloud St. Albert
When: June 17, 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Where: Rotary Park, St. Albert
Admission: Free to attend

Join the Outloud Foundation for their all ages Pride celebration. Throughout the day, this event will feature a bouncy house, petting zoo, market, and various performances by local talent including two drag shows. Details about accommodations for various accessibility needs are available on the Outloud website.

What: Edmonton Drag Festival
When: June 17, 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Where: Louise McKinney Riverfront Park
Admission: $36.46 tickets

This festival is debuting in Canada’s largest urban park. Come celebrate Pride with some of the country’s top drag performers, including Jada Shada Hudson, Chelazon Leroux and BratPack with many others. There will also be educational resources, prizes, food, and other activities for members of the 2SLGBTQIAP+ community, allies, and supporters.
