This week there are a variety of winter activities as well as a talk about Black History Month.

In our weekly column Social Intercourse, we share our picks for notable things happening on campus and in Edmonton. Check out all these amazing local events!

What: Ahmed “Knowmadic” Ali presents Black History Month: Why?

When: February 10 from 12:00 to 1:15 p.m.
Where: Virtual
Admission: Free

Ahmed Ali is a multi award-winning Poet Laureate. This talk will discuss why Black History Month is celebrated in Canada as well as experiences of Canadians of African descent. Ali, better known as “Knowmadic,” will also be discussing how we can uphold positive communal growth as a diverse community.

What: City Hall Plaza Ice Grooves

When: February 11 and 12 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Where: City Hall Plaza
Admission: Free

It’s hard to beat something that’s free. On Fridays and Saturdays, City Hall Plaza is hosting ice skating nights where skate rentals are completely free! There will be live DJs and music to accompany the perfect skating session. Take advantage of the last few dregs of winter by going skating!

What: International Festival of Winter Cinema

When: February 11 to 20 starting at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Hawrelak Park
Admission: Free

This is the world’s only free, outdoor, winter film festival. It features films with all kinds of winter themes; there is an emphasis on local filmmakers but with films from all over the world. Each night has its own theme, so make sure to check out the schedule on their website ahead of time!

What: Sweet Treats and Latte Festival

When: February 5 to 27
Where: Shops in Old Strathcona
Admission: Various

To spread love for the businesses in Old Strathcona, this festival creates a curated list of shops in the district. Those that purchase a feature hot drink or sweet treat at one of 17 participating businesses can get a limited edition coffee sleeve or sticker, designed by local artists! If you’ve got a sweet tooth and love supporting local, this perfect for you!

Jin He

Jin previously served as the 2021-22 Production Editor at The Gateway. She also had a brief stint as 2022-23 Production Editor. She is in her first year studying pharmacy. If not sleeping, she can often be found supporting local artisans, obsessing over e-sports, and sporting some wicked earrings.
