Just because it's winter does not mean you cannot have fun, check out these events for a night out on the town!

In our weekly column Social Intercourse, we (i.e.your friendly neighbourhood Arts & Culture writers) share our picks for your weekend (or mid-week) night out.

What: Swing Dance! Every Friday

When: February 7, 8 p.m. – 11:59 p.m.
Where: Sugar Swing Ballroom 10019 80 Ave
Admission: $14 with lesson, $12 with no lesson (discount if you buy online)

Want to live out your dreams of being in Footloose? Looking for a fun date? On February 7 (and every Friday), you can learn how to jive and swing at Sugar Swing Ballroom. It’s beginner-friendly, and for all ages. There’s also a bar and live music! 

What: Wildfire Teen Improv Festival

When: February 4 – 23
Where: RapidFire Theatre
Admission: $8.00 for advanced tickets 

Wildfire is RapidFire Theatre’s annual teen improv festival. The festival features three competitions: The Nosebowl High School Theatresports Tournament, The Alberta Regionals of the Canadian Improv Games, and The Wildfire Junior. Support your local high schools with just eight bucks and get a belly-ache from laughter! 

What: Chinook Series

When: February 6 – 16, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: ATB Financial Arts Barns
Admission: $25 

The Chinook Series is an 11-day arts festival, in which contemporary performances, workshops, and salons are held. The Chinook Series aims to foster an inclusive and accessible community of artists and audiences. The festival features events sponsored by Black Arts Matter, WWPT’s Canoe Theatre Festival, Azimuth’s Expanse Festival, Fringe Theatre, and
Sound Off: A Deaf Theatre Festival.

What: Westmount Window Wanderland

When: February 7 & 8, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: Westmount
Admission: Free 

The streets of Westmount becomes a wonderful gallery for two days. Silhouettes, snowflakes, and paint decorate the windows of the Westmount neighbourhood, capturing the eyes of all who pass by. Take a stroll or drive around with friends to clear your mind from silly midterms.

What: Silver Skate Festival 2020

When: February 7 – 17, at 8:00 p.m.
Where: River Valley
Admission: Free

Rediscover the magic of winter at the Silver Skate Festival! Rooted in Dutch tradition, the festival combines sports, arts and culture, and recreation into one event. You can ice skate, make Bannock, listen to live music and so much more. The festival lasts for 10-days and is family-oriented, so it’s fun for all ages. Grab your friends and family and relax for a day or two!
