Marble Pedestal: Iced Capps

Stay cool with this icy drink!

This is a love letter to Tim Hortons’ Iced Cappuccinos.

From summer vacations during junior high, to skipping Math 20 with friends, to writing university papers at 3 in the morning, there has always been one constant in all of my formative years — Iced Capps.

In July 2019, Tim Hortons celebrated the 20th birthday of the Iced Capp, Canada’s favourite iced beverage. As we reach 2020, let’s remember this delectable treat!

It’s easy to see why this one drink is popular. It’s the one caffeinated drink that isn’t so damn overpriced. $3.79 for a large — Starbucks could never.

This the only unifying thing between all the generations — Boomers, Millennials, Gen Z — which becomes incredibly noticeable during the hot summer months. What is one drink that all teens and adults buy? Iced Capps, of course! It’s too hot to drink coffee, iced coffees don’t always cut it and Slurpees are just frozen soda.

At the same time, the most Canadian defining act is drinking an Iced Capp in –40 degrees Celsius weather during the winter. After trekking from our high school to Tim Hortons during a storm, one of my friends who newly immigrated to Canada boasted that she “was more Canadian” than our other friend because she ordered an Iced Capp over a warm beverage. I thought it was a cute moment, because of how this one item could create a community.

The Iced Capp also comes in many different flavours, depending on the season and location. There’s the original, Vanilla, and Caramel Iced Capps. Recently, four new flavours were added for a limited time to commemorate the 20th anniversary: Mocha, Oreo, Chocolate Chip, and Salted Caramel Iced Capps. Since it’s winter, there’s a gingerbread version as well. So, you’re not limited to one flavour and can always try something new.

Even as I write this article, I have an Iced Capp with me. It’s the perfect writing tool — nobody can write without caffeine. A great way to support your friends during school is to buy them an Iced Capp and it’s inexpensive as well.

If you’re anything like me, Iced Capps has been around for almost as long as you’ve been alive and you have too many fond memories of it. So, indulge in this little treat and don’t feel any shame in downing as many as you want.
