Top 5: Ways to save money as a student

Practical money-saving tips for the frugal student

In light of the new provincial budget, students are going to have to start pinching their pennies more than ever before. If you want to be able to finish that degree you’ve started, you better be willing to shell out a couple hundred more bucks! Here are the top five ways to save money as a student.

Take public transit

It’s easy to save a lot of money while riding transit! The U-Pass is included in tuition and is a relatively reliable way to get around the city. It’s definitely a lot cheaper than paying for a car, or riding in taxis everywhere you go. If you’re one of those students who has a team of drivers and a personal carriage, come down off your high horse and live like us commoners!

Drop your classes before the deadline

Put your glasses back on and face the facts: you’ll drop your classes anyways! Might as well do it while you can still get a full refund. Paying for a class you won’t even get credit for is not only a waste of money, but is insanely frustrating. It’s actually like getting free money: all you have to do is go on Bear Tracks, click a few buttons, and a couple hundred bucks will end up in your bank account.

Get your friend to cut your hair

Got any weird friends that are aspiring barbers? Volunteer as a test subject for them! They can’t really take money from you in good faith seeing as you’re risking so much in letting them mess with your hair. If it does end up going horribly wrong, hats are pretty cheap at the thrift store!

Get a sugar daddy/mommy

Want to travel the world? Make lifelong friends through meaningful shared experiences? Fly around in jets and helicopters? Learn discipline, tidiness and get fit? No, this isn’t a pitch to join the military… all you’ve got to do is seduce a filthy rich multi-millionaire! You might have to sacrifice a bit of dignity, but let’s be honest; you haven’t got that much to begin with.

Scrape old food out of the microwaves

All of that food that ends up caking the walls of the microwaves is not only easily accessible, but totally free! Those suckers who let their uncovered food containers splatter sauce everywhere are losing out on tons of calories they could otherwise be eating. Be frugal; bring a spoon and get to work. It only takes about 45 minutes to fill a cereal bowl with scrapings, that’s definitely enough food to get you through the day!
