Top 5: Instant hot chocolate flavours I wish existed

This classic holiday treat could really use an update

It’s almost the end of November, and that means we’re on the home stretch for Christmas! There are only this many days left to buy useless trinkets to swap with your loved ones. One of my favourite things about the pre-Christmas season is readily available hot chocolate mix in all its wonderful incarnations. Now, although it seems as if all possible flavours and adaptations of said beverage are already on the market, I believe there are plenty more that could make you a pretty penny if marketed properly. Can you make these all on your stove? Sure. But that’s way too much work. I want my hot chocolate right now with as little effort as possible, and you can only get that with a mix.

So without further ado, here are the top five instant hot chocolate mixes I wish existed!

Paprika

A nice mug of hot chocolate is a great way to warm yourself up on a cold day. That being said, what better way to warm your body up than a spicy shock to the system? Hot chocolate with paprika not only makes you feel all warm inside, but delivers that extra kick you need to keep your body moving on those extremely cold days!

Whiskey

Sneaking some whiskey into your hot chocolate is a wonderful way to make those holiday family gatherings more bearable. Having packets of whiskey-infused hot chocolate powder would help you avoid those disapproving stares from your grandma. On top of that, maybe it would give you the courage to hash it out with your crazy uncle over whether or not it’s a good idea to build pipelines from gas stations to every garage in the country. “No more freezing your hands off while you refuel,” he would say; you could respond with a resounding “Okay, boomer.”

Turtles

Turtles are delicious. What’s a better combo than chocolate, caramel and pecans? Turtles and hot chocolate! Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for preserving marine life, but I think that turtle-flavoured hot chocolate would be worth the backlash. The hints of sea salt and crunchy texture of shell would make for a delightful treat on a cold winter’s night!

The way my mom used to make it

My mom used to make hot chocolate in a big pot on the stove, and it was a lot faster than microwaving one mug at a time with the little powder packs. She used to throw in all sorts of awesome ingredients to give it that special homemade taste: cocoa, sugar, cream, a hint of butter, a pinch of salt, onions, peppers, carrots, potatoes, beef; I could go on! She usually let all that simmer for a couple of hours and served us heaping bowls of it. Put that into powder form and I’d buy it!

Peppermint

You might find this hard to believe, but just the other day I was lounging by a roaring fire, behind my mahogany desk, in a high-backed leather armchair. In one hand, I had a mug of hot chocolate, in the other was a candy cane. I went to stir my hot chocolate and ended up accidentally dissolving my candy cane in it. Aghast at my unfortunate error, I stood to dispose of this worthless slop I was now drinking. Whilst strolling to the kitchen sink, a delicious smell wafted toward my nostrils. I stopped in my tracks, able to do naught but taste this bizarre concoction in my mug. To my great surprise, the mixture of peppermint and chocolate was extraordinary! I’d recommend that anyone with ties to Big Hot Chocolate trademark this idea right away.
