Exploring Edmonton: Escape Hour escape room

Getting locked in a room has never been more fun!

What: Escape Hour
Where: 10025 102A Ave NW
Price: $24.99 per person, except for the Five Lives room which is $29.99 per person

According to their website, Escape Hour is rated number-one in escape rooms in Edmonton. However, the offering of a Matrix-themed room, based on the film, is what incited me and my friends to try this experience. Although I don’t love The Matrix, pretending to be either Neo or Morpheus is rather cool.

Escape Hour offers other rooms, such as Senator’s Battle, 5 Elements, Five Lives, and Bank Heist. Five Lives, in particular, takes up the most space of the facility and requires more physical labour.

Located within City Centre, the escape rooms are difficult to miss. I understand the struggle of organizing individuals into one spot, especially when they’re from different places around Edmonton, but due to the nearby LRT station and bus stops, anyone can easily visit Escape Hour. This is in comparison to other escape rooms where they are semi-hidden in the city and is difficult to travel to.

I won’t spoil anything about the room or give hints on how to win, since it would ruin the fun. However, it was a fun and relatively unique experience for everyone.

Within each room, a staff member would be your gamemaster and give you hints on a tablet and guide you through the game — which I think is a nice touch, as it makes you feel as though you’re in a video game. Because of this, guests are expected to make reservations beforehand — so no walk-ins are allowed. Your group is split into two groups: one being Neo and the other being Morpheus. The game master does tell you about the rules and do’s and don’ts before you start. According to our gamemaster (shoutout to Quinn!), Edmontonians are destructive and like to break things, while Calgarians are weird and tend to bite or swallow items — so don’t break or eat anything. The escape room itself is uniquely designed and wasn’t extremely difficult to solve — there’s a lot of yelling involved though.

If you’re looking for an exciting way to test your friendship, then definitely check out Escape Hour escape rooms!
