After 30 months of construction costing $483.5 million, Rogers Place was unveiled to the public during an open house on September 10, 2016. As the City’s newest, shiniest, and most technologically advanced venue for sports, concerts and other events, the arena will draw tens of thousands of people downtown up to 200 nights a year.
Remember this? A parking lot used to exist where Rogers Place now stands. Alanna YeeThe MacEwan LRT station, serviced by the Metro Line, sits just north of Rogers Place. Alanna YeeThe arena has a seating capacity of about 18, 500 for hockey games and 20 000 for concerts. The scoreboard is almost quadruple the size of the one in Rexall Place. Alanna YeeFour Oilers Stores dot the main concourse, with a handful of others scattered throughout the complex. Alanna YeeRogers Place has a variety of food options ranging from sushi to gourmet burgers. Regardless of your tastes, expect to pay a solid price: a cheeseburger and fries, for example, costs $15. Alanna YeeThe main concourse is wide and bright compared to Rexall Place, the Edmonton Oilers’ previous home. Alanna YeeSome items not permitted inside the arena include outside food and beverage, backpacks, cameras with lenses longer than 3”, tripods, selfie sticks, roller blades, and non-service animals. Alanna YeeThe entrance to Rogers Place is equipped with metal detectors. Arena patrons may also be subject to a physical search. Alanna YeeAt the heart of Ford Hall lies Tsa tsa ke k’e (Iron Foot Place), a circular mosaic by world-renowned Cold Lake First Nations artist Alex Janvier. At 14 metres in diameter, the piece took six months, twenty workers, and almost one million glass tiles to create. Alanna YeeIn addition to being the main entry point to Rogers Place, Ford Hall serves as a pedway over 104 Ave. Large windows on either side of the hall allow in natural light from both the east and west. Alanna YeeEven without a ticket inside the arena, the public can access Ford Hall year-round. Alanna YeeStairs and escalators bridge arena patrons from the main entrance on 103 Ave and 103 St to Ford Hall, the atrium entrance to Rogers Place. Alanna YeeRogers Place sits in ICE District, an area that is to become a hub for sports, entertainment, and shopping in the downtown core. A hotel, office towers and residential units round out the current development plans. Alanna YeeIt is estimated that up to 1200 people each day worked on construction of the arena, which began in March 2014. Alanna Yee
