Job Posting: 2016/17 Contributing Editor

Contributing Editor (x3)

Reports to:                            Editor-in-Chief

Terms of Contract:               Part-time, from May 1, 2016 to April 30, 2017

Expected Hours: May – 10-15hrs/week, June and July – 5-10hrs/week, August – 10-15hrs/week, Sept.-Apr. – 20-25 hrs/week

*note: these hours may fluctuate from week to week.

Job Summary:

The Contributing Editor will be responsible for producing and editing consistent content for the online platform and contributing content to the print magazine. These editors should have a wide variety of skills that could include, but are not limited to, writing, interviewing, copy editing, time management, volunteer relations, video shooting and editing, photography, etc. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that matters of interest to university students are covered in Arts & Culture, Opinion, Sports, and any other relevant sections.
  • Write and edit copy for all sections, as distributed by the Online Editor.
  • Write editorials as necessary in conjunction with the Online Editor and Editor in Chief
  • Write at least one feature for the magazine per month, as distributed by the Managing Editor.
  • Develop at least one video/podcast or multimedia project per month, to be edited by the Online Editor.
  • Work in conjunction with Online Editor to pitch content ideas at all meetings.
  • Be available at all meetings to take content ideas.
  • Work as a team with other Contributing Editors, meeting frequently to discuss content.
  • Request and solicit photos and graphics in conjunction with the Photo and Design & Production Editor for each article.
  • Distribute media passes as applicable.
  • Coordinate at least one content related workshop per semester, in conjunction with the other Contributing Editors and the Editor in Chief.
  • Hand out issues of The Gateway once per month at the discretion of the Editor-in-Chief.
  • Perform other job related duties as required by the Editor-in-Chief.

Qualifications:

  1. Must be registered in the equivalent of at least one (1) course for credit at the University of Alberta during each term of the Fall and Winter sessions of their term in this position.
  2. Must be available to work varying hours.
  3. Must have basic computer skills.
  4. Must have experience with writing, editing and interviewing.
  5. Must be able to deal effectively with Gateway and University staff, students, and the general public.
