Eating Edmonton: Clever Rabbit
Clever Rabbit is a great option for those looking for a decent vegan spot in Edmonton
Most Eating Edmonton article writers tend to review restaurants that they’ve never been to. I’ve always wanted to write an article on a vegan cafe called Clever Rabbit, but I’ve already been there too many times to count. I eventually decided that I could order something other than my usual dishes and drinks, and create a new experience that I could write on.
I ordered the Winter Spice Soy Latte ($6) because I’ve never had it before. I don’t usually enjoy lattes though; I’m one of those tea drinkers with a particular disdain for coffee. But today was the day I’d go out of my comfort zone.
It took me so long to decide what to eat, the waitress had already come to my table several times, pen and pad in hand, asking if I was ready to order. I knew if I didn’t order soon, my hunger pangs would eventually start to set in. I finally decided on the BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger ($18).
When the waitress set down my Winter Spice Latte on the table, the scent of freshly baked gingerbread wafted into my nose. When I finally had a sip, I was a little disappointed. I could taste a hint of gingerbread, but there was something bitter in there that immediately puts me off. I take another sip and realize the bitter taste is the espresso. As I mentioned, I don’t like coffee. It was not as sweet as I would have liked it, but a spoonful of sugar fixed that problem. I’ll admit, the Winter Spice Latte was not for me, but coffee drinkers may enjoy it.
It didn’t take long for our food to arrive. My BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger was huge, and I didn’t know how to wrap my tiny mouth around it. I squished it down and took the biggest bite of my life, not quite knowing what to expect. I was then immediately punched in the mouth with a variety of different flavours. I could taste the maple smoked “bacon,” the creaminess of the cashew cheese, the freshness of the lettuce and tomato. The “mayo” slathered on the buns gave the burger the extra touch it needed. Every aspect of the burger worked so well together, I can only describe this burger in four words: messy, but incredibly delicious. It was so good that it made up for my disappointment in the latte.
Overall, Clever Rabbit is a good venue for a variety of hangouts. It’s great for bringing friends and family (the restaurant is very kid-friendly). It’s also a great place for a date night, brunch, or even to pop in for a cup of tea or coffee and a quick dessert. It’s a laid back cafe with great food and service. I can’t recommend it enough!
