Social Intercourse: August 13

From hardcore shows to performance art, August is packed with things to see and do.

In our biweekly column Social Intercourse, we share our picks for notable things happening on campus and in Edmonton. Check out all these amazing local events!

What: Occultivators of Doom (OCOD) with Sick Rituals, VIBES, and Vain at The Starlite Room
When: August 15
Where: The Starlite Room
Admission: $17.72

OCOD is coming to visit from Vancouver, and bringing Ken Fleming and Shane Smith back home for a gig. The two, being hardcore Edmonton scene vets from their time with Society’s No Fucking Use (SNFU) deserve a warm welcome. And OCOD as a whole is a great project to check out. Self described positive hardcore band, VIBES, are also not to be missed. Sick Rituals and Vain on the bill too make it stacked.

What: 4-Way Stretch
When: August 15 – 23
Where: The Roxy Theatre
Admission: $10 for students

4-Way Stretch, written, performed, and starred by Stretcher Hartout, is an exploration of gender identity discovery through drag. “Through drag acts and storytelling, does Stretcher find an answer to his struggles? Or is he left questioning his discoveries?”

What: After Hours of Muttart: Imagination Brews with Sea Change
When: August 15
Where: The Muttart Conservatory
Admission: $60

Drink some beers and see some plants at the Muttart Conservatory. Check out tropical plants in the pyramids, or since it’s still summer, check out the canapes outside. Roam around with some local beers, couldn’t be a better time.

What: WOOT with Nine Iron Violence, Burning Starships, and Promethium at The Aviary
When: August 14
Where: The Aviary
Admission: $15 Advance, $20 at doors

WOOT is headlining The Aviary, and it’s absolutely worth checking out. The one-man shoegaze project has been pumping out insanely good work this year and is absolutely a set to see. The recently renamed Nine Iron Violence are sure to get some movement and so are Burning Starships and Promethium.

What: Edmonton Fringe Festival
When: August 14 – 24
Where: Old Strathcona and Whyte Avenue
Admission: Free to $20

The 44th annual Fringe Festival is set to go on during the middle of August, and its definitely worth checking out. See some productions, try some food from the food trucks, and listen to live music! And, 100 per cent of ticket sales for productions go to artists, support art!
