August is a month full of artistic festivals and events. Check out this list of things to do this month.

In our biweekly column Social Intercourse, we share our picks for notable things happening on campus and in Edmonton. Check out all these amazing local events!


What: Edmonton Heritage Festival
When: August 2 – 4
Where: Edmonton Expo Centre – 7515 118 Ave
Admission: Free

The Edmonton Heritage Festival is back! Check out the festival for free to see some cultural dances, try some food, and do some crafts. Entry is free, and there are no food tickets this year. Try whatever you want, and pay the vendor directly.

What: Sip & Science: Cosmos
When: August 8
Where: TELUS World of Science – 11211 142 St
Admission: $18.95

Try some cocktails and check out some unique exhibits at the TELUS World of Science on August 8th during this adults only event. Stardust: The Universe in You, Health Zone, and The Sky Tonight, are all available to see. And, there’ll be live music, snacks from local restaurants, and a silent auction.

What: Edmonton Fringe Festival
When: August 14 – 24
Where: Old Strathcona and Whyte Avenue
Admission: FREE

The 44th annual Fringe Festival is set to go on during the middle of August, and its definitely worth checking out. See some productions, try some food from the food trucks, and listen to live music! And, 100 per cent of ticket sales for productions go to artists, support art!

What: 90s Bands as Bands Festival
When: August 1 – 2
Where: The Aviary
Admission: $37 for both days, or $20 advance and $30 at doors for individual days

90s Bands as Bands has local groups cover the discographies of well known 90s bands. Some notable sets include Gratuitous as The Tragically Hip, Paro as American Football, Piss Girl as Bikini Kill, and Gun Vape as Nine Inch Nails. Be sure to check it out to support our local music scene.


What: Cariwest Caribbean Arts Festival
When: August 8 – 10
Where: Sir Winston Churchill Square
Admission: Free

The Cariwest Caribbean Arts Festival is a celebration of Caribbean culture. There will be a parade on August 9, and there’ll be a Caribbean Village in Churchill Square. It’s set to have food trucks, food tents, and merchant tents to check out.
